Lib Dem Work and Pensions Spokesperson, Christine Jardine, has called on Amber Rudd to scrap the two child benefit cap after telling MPs how badly her family would have been affected had it been in place when she was younger.

The Edinburgh West MP appealed to the Work and Pensions Secretary to bear in mind how a family’s situation can change overnight, putting parents who had previously been able to support a third child into financial hardship.
Ms Jardine said:
“I come from a family where we had working a father, three children, and were relatively comfortable.
“But we became a single parent family overnight, and the two child cap could have driven my mother and the three of us into poverty.
“The Secretary of State needs to scrap the cap and modify the system, recognising that people aren’t always aware of what the future is going to hold when they have their children.
“The Tories love to tell us how they are the defenders of the family, but this immoral, punitive and discriminatory cap shows otherwise.”
