Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has encouraged participation as public consultation begins on Liam McArthur’s assisted dying bill at the Scottish Parliament.

The consultation launches on Thursday (23/09) and will be open for three months. The bill would allow adults who are both terminally ill and mentally competent the choice of an assisted death.

Liberal Democrat Ms Jardine is Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Choice at the End of Life in Westminster and recently proposed a motion on the subject at Federal Liberal Democrat Conference this month.

She said:

“Many of us see assisted dying as the next great social reform and with overwhelming public support for a change in the law, I welcome the consultation of this bill.

“This is all about giving those who have reached the final stages of a terminal illness the choice to die with dignity.

“It is only right that we take advantage of this consultation; I would encourage everyone to take this opportunity to have their say on this.”
