Edinburgh West MP, Christine Jardine, has issued a final call for constituents to contribute to the city council’s consultation on Low Emissions Zones (LEZs).
The Liberal Democrat MP also called on Ministers in Parliament to commit to decarbonising all vehicles earlier than their current target of 2040.
The LEZ consultation closes on Sunday (21 July), and Ms Jardine is leading a campaign to ensure that all vehicles are included across Edinburgh, rather than just the city centre.
Ms Jardine commented:
“The level of toxic pollutants in the air we breathe here in Edinburgh West is simply unacceptable.
“But instead of finally resolving the problem, the current LEZ proposals will concentrate even more pollution spewing cars along hotspots such as St John’s Road and Queensferry Road.
“I want to encourage everyone who is concerned about air quality in our part of the city to respond to the council’s consolation before it closes on Sunday.
“But this isn’t just a local issue requiring local solutions: all levels of government, in all parts of the UK, must take responsibility for seriously tackling toxic emissions.
“That’s why I’m pushing Ministers to come forward with a more ambitious target for decarbonising our roads.”
