Responding to the news that the Lord Provost of Edinburgh has resigned his position on three city management boards amid frustrations with the council's plans for the economy of the city, Liberal Democrat candidate for Edinburgh West, Christine Jardine, said:

"We know that the SNP leadership tries very hard to quash any rumblings of dissent within its ranks, so for this rift to come to the surface is a big deal for the party.

"The Lord Provost's actions make it clear that even the SNP's own elected representatives don't think that they and their Labour coalition partners are working in the best interests of the city.

"Of course, the whole reason they're in this mess is because of the SNP's decision in government to slash local authority funding, so instead of engaging in petty fights with other councillors I suggest that the Lord Provost takes his grievances straight to the top and demands that Nicola Sturgeon reverses these cuts as an urgent priority".
