This is an outrageous move by a Government supposedly ‘taking back control’ for the people of this country, but instead cutting them out of a decision on a no-deal Brexit.

Palace of Westminster.

Responding to the Government’s plans to suspend Parliament to force through a no-deal Brexit, Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine said:

“This is an outrageous move by a Government supposedly ‘taking back control’ for the people of this country, but instead cutting them out of a decision on a no-deal Brexit.

“A Prime Minister who was selected by a portion of Tory party is trying to force through a policy which even many Brexiteers have said, and government figures have warned, will be bad for this country.

“Just yesterday I joined more than 200 of my colleagues in signing the Church House Declaration, which said shutting down Parliament would be an undemocratic outrage and a historic constitutional crisis.

“Westminster is considered the cradle of democracy, but Boris Johnson is treating it with contempt. This is a deeply dangerous and irresponsible way to govern, and forcing through a no-deal Brexit which will be extremely damaging to my constituency, Scotland and the UK as a whole.

“The Liberal Democrats demand better and we will continue to oppose any attempts to shut down Parliament.”
